Furniture isn't quite as simple as it used to be. At Redhawk Handyman Services, we're seeing more furniture arrive for assembly with features that would have been unusual just a few years ago: LED lighting, USB charging ports, built-in electrical outlets, power strips, cable-management systems and other integrated technology.
We're noticing it in furniture assembly projects throughout Norman, Oklahoma City and the surrounding OKC metro, particularly with desks, beds, nightstands, entertainment centers and display cabinets.
It's an interesting shift. Furniture is increasingly being designed not only around how it looks or what it stores, but also around how people use technology in their homes.
LED Lighting Is Showing Up in More Furniture
One of the easiest trends to spot is integrated LED lighting.
LEDs have become especially common in gaming furniture, but we're now seeing lighting incorporated into many other types of ready-to-assemble furniture, including:
- Platform beds and headboards
- Nightstands
- Computer and home-office desks
- Gaming desks
- TV stands and entertainment centers
- Glass-door display cabinets
- Bookshelves and storage cabinets
- Vanities and dressing tables
Some pieces use simple accent lighting, while others include multiple colors, brightness settings, remote controls or different lighting modes. We recently assembled a glass-door cabinet in Norman that included built-in multi-color LED lighting. Without the lighting, it would have been a fairly traditional display cabinet. With the LEDs installed, the lighting became one of the main features of the piece.
That's becoming increasingly common in the furniture customers are asking us to assemble.
Built-In Power Strips Are Becoming Common in Desks
Desks are another area where furniture design is changing quickly.
Many newer computer desks, gaming desks and home-office desks include a power center built directly into the desktop or shelving system.
Depending on the model, that might include:
- Standard 120V outlets
- USB-A charging ports
- USB-C charging ports
- Integrated power strips
- Cable-management trays
- Cord-routing openings
- Monitor or accessory shelves
Instead of running several cords to a power strip underneath the desk, users can plug laptops, monitors, phones and accessories into connections that are built into the furniture itself.
For customers setting up a home office in Norman or Oklahoma City, that can make the finished workspace considerably cleaner and more convenient.
Beds and Nightstands Are Becoming Charging Stations
Technology is also finding its way into bedroom furniture. We've seen more platform beds, headboards and nightstands designed with built-in outlets and USB charging ports. Some combine those charging features with LED lighting around the headboard or underneath the bed. That makes sense when you think about how bedrooms are used today. Phones, watches, tablets, lamps and other devices often need power right next to the bed.
Manufacturers are increasingly building that functionality directly into the furniture.
It also means assembling a modern platform bed can involve more than connecting the side rails and installing the slats. There may be wiring, lighting strips, power modules, upholstered panels, storage drawers or wall-mounted headboard components to deal with as part of the setup.
Entertainment Centers and Display Cabinets Are Changing Too
TV stands and entertainment centers have also become more feature-rich.
Some now incorporate LED accent lighting around shelves or behind electronic components. Others include built-in electrical connections and cable-management areas intended for televisions, streaming devices and gaming systems.
Display cabinets are following a similar path.
Glass doors combined with illuminated shelving can turn a storage cabinet into a display for collectibles, décor or other items. These additional features can make the finished furniture look great, but they also add steps to the assembly process.
Modern Furniture Assembly Can Require More Planning
Furniture with integrated technology isn't necessarily difficult to assemble, but it often requires paying closer attention to the order of assembly.
- LED wiring may need to be routed through the furniture before certain panels are installed.
- A power module might need to be inserted into the desktop before the desk is flipped upright.
- Lighting controllers or adapters may need to remain accessible after the furniture is positioned.
- Cable clips and channels may need to be installed while the back of the unit is still accessible.
Skipping one of those steps can sometimes mean partially disassembling the furniture later to correct it.
That's one reason following the manufacturer's assembly sequence becomes especially important as furniture becomes more complex.
This Isn't Just Gaming Furniture Anymore
Gaming desks and RGB furniture helped make LED lighting popular, but these features are no longer limited to gaming rooms.
We're seeing similar ideas move into regular bedrooms, home offices, living rooms and storage furniture.
- A traditional-looking nightstand might hide USB charging ports in the back.
- A modern desk might have an outlet panel recessed into the desktop.
- A platform bed might include lighting inside the headboard.
- A display cabinet might have illuminated glass shelving.
Technology is becoming part of everyday furniture design rather than a separate accessory.
Home Office Furniture Is Becoming More Functional
Home-office furniture is probably one of the clearest examples of this shift.Along with assembling traditional desks and bookshelves, we're seeing workspaces include more integrated features such as power, cable management, monitor shelves and adjustable components. Motorized standing desks add another layer because the frame, motors, control panel and wiring all need to work together correctly before the desk is placed into service.
For people working from home, the desk has increasingly become the center of the entire workspace rather than simply a tabletop.
Redhawk Handyman Services provides professional desk assembly and home-office furniture assembly throughout Norman, Oklahoma City and surrounding communities.
If you're considering furniture with built-in lighting or power, there are a few things worth checking before ordering.
First, look at where the furniture itself plugs into the wall. Make sure you'll have an accessible household outlet close to the location where the furniture will sit. Also check the fully assembled dimensions. This is particularly important with larger desks, entertainment centers and platform beds.
For desks, look at the number and type of built-in connections. A desk advertised as having a “charging station” might have a very different combination of outlets and USB ports from another model.
For LED furniture, check how the lights are controlled. Depending on the product, that may be through a button, remote control or app.
And don't judge assembly complexity by the product photo alone. A sleek-looking desk or cabinet can still arrive in several boxes with dozens—or hundreds—of pieces of hardware.
