Nursery Furniture Glossary

Common crib, dresser, changing-table, storage, hardware, and wall-anchoring terms for planning a nursery setup in the Oklahoma City metro. Always follow the current manufacturer instructions; do not use recalled or drop-side cribs.

Nursery Furniture & Assembly Terms

Crib
The primary, deep-sided baby bed. Correct assembly following the manufacturer instructions helps ensure structural integrity; assembly alone does not certify that a crib meets current safety standards.
Convertible Crib
A crib designed to transition into a toddler bed, daybed, or full-sized bed, requiring disassembly and reassembly with conversion kits.
Changing Table
A piece of furniture used for diaper changes, often including storage drawers or shelves.
Dresser / Changing Combo
A standard dresser with a detachable tray or safety rails on top to function as a changing table.
Glider / Rocker
A comfortable chair, often used for feeding and soothing the baby. Assembly must ensure smooth, stable movement.
Bookcase / Storage Unit
Shelving or cabinets used for storing toys, books, and supplies. Wall anchoring is recommended for stability (see Tip-Over Restraint).
Slats
The vertical bars or rails on the sides of a crib. The spacing between them is a critical safety standard defined by the manufacturer and current federal guidelines.
Assembly Instructions (Manual)
The manufacturer's guide for putting the furniture together. Always follow the current manufacturer instructions; do not use recalled or drop-side cribs.

Safety & Wall-Anchoring Terms

Baby Proofing (Childproofing)
The process of modifying a home environment to reduce hazards for an infant or toddler. Furniture assembly is distinct from a full childproofing consultation.
Safety Gate
A barrier placed in a doorway or at the top or bottom of stairs.
Pressure-Mounted Gate
Secured by pressure against the walls, suitable for doorways, but not recommended for the top of stairs.
Hardware-Mounted Gate
Drilled and screwed directly into the wall or door frame, providing maximum security. Required for the top of stairs.
Tip-Over Restraint (Anti-Tip Kit)
Straps or brackets used to anchor furniture (dressers, bookcases) to the wall stud, reducing tip-over risk. Anchoring reduces risk but does not eliminate it entirely; follow the manufacturer instructions.
Cabinet Locks / Latches
Devices installed inside cabinets and drawers to prevent a child from opening them.
Corner Guards
Soft, protective covers placed on sharp corners (like coffee tables or hearths) to reduce injury.
Outlet Covers / Plugs
Small plastic covers or sliding mechanisms used to block electrical outlets.
